Xiamen airport seeks tie up with Taiwanese carriers

XIAMEN International Airport Group Co Ltd, which operates the airport in China's southeastern Fujian province across from Taiwan, has revealed that it is looking to establish partnerships with Taiwan carriers in the hope of launching direct regular weekly flights.

This comes as the incoming government of Taiwan president-elect Ma Ying-jeou has slated July 4 as the launch date for the first regular direct charter flights between China and Taiwan since their split at the end of a civil war in 1949.

The airport is said to be considering a number of options, including transforming itself into an air cargo hub for flights to Taiwan, according to comments made by an unidentified airport executive, reports AFP.

The executive said that no concrete talks have taken place with airlines from Taiwan so far, however, he believes the state-owned airport group is well positioned for closer ties with Taiwanese carriers as it had been taking chartered flights between Taiwan and the mainland for years.

At present only holiday services are allowed on passenger charter flights, and cargo flights are conducted on a case-by-case basis, the report added.
